About the Russian Culture

Russia is the largest country in the world.  The official name of Russia is the Russian Federation.  It is located between northern Europe and Asia.  Because Russia is so large, it is made up of many different regions each with their own unique cultures.  Russia is divided into 83 Federal Subjects, which are divided further into republics, provinces, territories, autonomous (self-governing) provinces, autonomous (self-governing) districts and federal cities.

Moscow is the capital of Russia and the biggest city.  The second biggest city is Saint Petersburg.  In 1991, parts of the Soviet Union became independent countries. There were 15 countries that became separate countries from the Soviet Union.  One of these was Russia.

The Russian government is a republic with a president and a parliament.  The government building is located in Moscow. It is called the Kremlin.  The Kremlin is in the middle of the city and overlooks the Moskya River, Saint Basil’s Cathedral, Red Square, and the Alexander Garden.  The Kremlin includes four palaces, four cathedrals, and the Kremlin wall and towers.  The President of Russia lives here, too.
