About American Culture and Heritage

The United States is a very large country, and Americans come from all over the world. Because the country is so big, each part of it can be very different! Still, there are some things that tie everyone together.

Schools may be different than you are used to. Many children ride big yellow buses to school. At school, kids have lockers—individual cabinets for students to keep their books. Children do activities with their school like play sports or act in plays.

The most popular sports are baseball, football, and basketball. Children play these sports on teams or just with friends in their neighborhood. Big cities have professional sports teams that people enjoy watching with their families and friends. The whole city celebrates when their team wins a big game!

Americans eat many different kinds of foods. For breakfast, they might eat cold cereal or eggs and toast. For lunch, they may eat a sandwich or a salad. They usually eat lunch away from home, like at school or work. Dinner is usually the biggest meal of the day. People may eat hamburgers, pizza, macaroni, and cheese, or anything else. You can find all different kinds of foods in many places. Americans also enjoy eating Mexican, Italian, Indian, Chinese, or other foods. Maybe you can find foods from your home!

Americans have three special holidays. One is the Fourth of July, or Independence Day, which celebrates when the United States became a country. There are parades and fireworks and people decorate with red, white, and blue. Many people have picnics and cook outside to enjoy the beautiful summer weather.

Halloween happens on October 31. Everyone dresses in costumes, and children walk from house to house collecting candy. People decorate with things that are scary, like ghosts and monsters. It isn’t scary on Halloween, though—everyone knows it is just for fun.

Thanksgiving happens in November. It is a day for everyone to be thankful for what they have in their life. People visit their family and make a big meal with turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

A special festival is many areas is the county fair or state fair. There are rides like roller coasters and Ferris wheels. There are also exhibits of animals, crafts, and cakes. There may be music shows and competitions, and you will see whatever products are most important for that area.
